Kids in the Kitchen
Mrs Mathers, who is a specialist Home Economics teacher delivers a unique educational program at Wakool Burraboi Public School, Kids in the Kitchen. The program runs every second Friday. It is just one of the special initiatives that we are able to offer as a small school.
Culinary skills are embedded in the English Literacy Syllabus. The K-2 class will be focusing on procedural texts and this links nicely to following a recipe. Each fortnight the students will be cooking simple foodstuffs that can be easily done at home with parent's assistance. A favourite has been, making a "frog in a pond".
The 3-6 class focusses on comparisons. They will be comparing home-made foods to bought items. Comparisons fit into the "exposition" text type in the English Syllabus. After the students have followed a recipe to make a particular food, they will do a taste test to compare what they have made to a shop bought equivalent. They will then give both versions of the food a score out of ten and express the similarities and the differences between the two. The aim of the Unit is to expose students to home cooking as an alternative to the convenience of readymade foodstuffs available in our supermarkets.
